Generation Y Not?

The insurance industry is one big melting pot.  It’s like a New York second; every race, religion, culture, you name it, represented.  So where in the world is everyone over the age of twenty-five?  Why is Generation Y so conspicuously absent?

I am a rare one.  Coming fresh out of Olivet College, with an Insurance & Risk Management Degree secured under my eager millennium arm, I nabbed the promising position of Transportation Underwriter for JM Wilson Corporation.  I enjoyed the creative challenges, even welcomed them.  I didn’t have long to wait.

The typical Boomer-In-The-Biz-Agent-Over-30-Years hit me from day one.  You know the scenario:  a company declines a risk and he or she knows ‘better’ (and argues to convince you you’re dead-wrong).  Don’t allow another’s seniority in the industry to undermine your self confidence.  Trust your intelligence, intuition and instincts.  Confidence, knowledge and determination are ‘Generation-proof.’

So take note.  While the Boomer generation essentially appears to run the country, the reality is that Gen Y dramatically and exponentially is changing the very way business is being doneFacebook, Twitter, and Linked In—the hot new Must-Haves of Social Media—are our brain children that no business can afford to grow without.

Hey, we are the new technology.  We cut our teeth on the Internet.  Computers, our kindergarten toys!  And so I say, who better than to challenge, grow and take this insurance industry by Hi-Speed, High-Def storm than us—Generation Why Not?
